Recent comprehensive reports by the Washington Post of the United States and the Guardian of the United Kingdom, a report issued by the United States Congress stated that the United States is the largest producer of plastic waste in the world. Inexpensive and versatile plastics have led to a global deluge of plastic waste. Single-use plastic products can cause marine biology to be entangled and suffocated, causing water and soil pollution and seriously endangering the ecosystem.
Status of the U.S. waste plastic waste problem
The United States is the highest producer of single-use plastic products. Since the 1960s, plastic waste in the United States has been increasing dramatically. The United States now produces approximately 42 million tons of plastic waste each year, which means that each American produces an average of 130 kilograms of plastic waste a year. The total amount of plastic waste produced in the United States in a year is more than the combined waste of all European Union countries.
Compared with other countries, some cities in the United States generate 2 to 8 times more plastic waste than cities of the same level. In 2010, the United States dumped a large amount of plastic waste into the ocean. Although the United States has a well-developed waste disposal system, due to the large coastal population and high per capita waste generation rate, two percent of the total waste enters the ocean from disposal.
According to the data in 2010, the total amount of garbage generated by the coastal population of the United States is 13.8 million tons, ranking first in the world. In addition, the United States is also the second largest exporter of waste plastic in the world. In 2019, the United States exported about 1.2 million tons of waste. With China’s ban on foreign waste taking effect, a large amount of American plastic waste has been transferred to countries such as Southeast Asian countries and Canada. Environmental plastic waste generated in the United States could be even more harmful globally if imported waste is not properly disposed of in the receiving country.
Although the United States has a well-developed infrastructure for collecting, transporting, and disposing of waste, and the vast majority of U.S. residents have access to waste collection and recycling channels, illegal dumping and littering are still widespread. There is also a strong public desire to recycle these materials. The U.S. needs a new strategy to tackle the massive amount of plastic waste.
Model of plastic waste recycling
The traditional model of plastic recycling is probably “new plastic – waste plastic – recycled waste plastic – recycled plastic – waste plastic”. In this model, plastic is an irreversible process from production to the end of use, and plastic will eventually be disposed of as waste. The wide application of Niutech pyrolysis technology in the world has opened up a resource recycling path of “new plastics – waste plastics – plastic oil – new plastics”. Large continuous waste plastic pyrolysis technology and equipment of Niiutech have a pyrolysis rate of more than 90%. The solid waste residue and gas produced meet the most stringent emission standards. The whole process does not produce harmful gases such as dioxin, and there is no secondary pollution.
Using Pyrolysis Technology To Tackle Plastic Waste Deluge
Pyrolysis technology provides an excellent solution for the environmentally sound disposal of mixed plastic waste, low-value waste plastics, disposable plastic products, and marine plastic waste. Converting waste plastics into fuel oil can both save increasingly scarce petrochemical resources and realize resource recycling. The pyrolysis equipment is well suited for the United States, Europe and other regions with more robust and developed waste plastic recycling systems.
Waste plastic pyrolysis production line of Niutech belongs to the one-time investment cost for construction, the service life can reach more than ten years, basically does not need maintenance. The high quality plastic pyrolysis oil produced can be directly used as fuel oil, and is competitively purchased by many large petrochemical companies. It can also be used as a raw material for the preparation of new plastics.
At present, this pyrolysis equipment has been cooperated in many countries such as China, Germany, USA, UK, Denmark, Brazil, Hungary, Turkey, Estonia, Iraq, India, Korea, Thailand, etc. It has greatly contributed to the realization of global harmless, reduction and resourceization of waste plastics.
